I had two thoughts in my head when I became unexpectedly unemployed. One, do I want to go out and find a new job in the same industry I was in? Two, would I like to further my education and become a better version of myself? I opted for number two.
In order to figure out what type of education you want, you need to contemplate your resume. Again more questions to ponder. Do you want to compliment your abilities, or go off and try something totally different? With my skill set I knew that Microsoft Office Applications and QuickBooks Specialist was the course I needed. It complimented all my strengths in my wheel house. It would be the perfect fit.
Selecting a school is not as easy as one thing. There are hurdles you must jump for the state to pay for the privilege of enriching your education. You must be truly motivated. You must go to an orientation, fill out a career packet, interview with a counselor, and take a basic skills test. You have to want it. And I did.
Next, find a school. Unemployment always suggests to visit two or three. The school must be pre-approved by the state in order for them to pay your tuition. The first one I chose to see was close to home. I called and scheduled an interview. It was an eight week course with many of the skills I knew I needed to take. The interview went well and I was accepted. Yet something did not feel right. I didn’t feel at home there. There was no comfort zone or connection with the person I was being interviewed by.
The next school I scheduled an interview with was the Network Learning Institute in Mt. Laurel, NJ. I felt comfortable the moment I walked in. The program they offered was extensive and included all the things that people should know in this modern world of technology (and then some). There are 10 modules to learn including all of the Microsoft programs and Access, QuickBooks Fundamentals, QuickBooks Advanced, Job Skills, and Business writing. It was a six-month program. This appealed to me greatly because I knew the more knowledge I gained, the more appealing I would be in the workforce once I passed my certifications. I had found my new beginning.
I have just completed my fourth week at the Network Learning Institute. My instructor is amazing to say the least. I never thought I would look forward to going to school every morning and be inspired every single day about what I am learning. The Network Learning Institute instills this in me. I have no doubt that because of them my future will be full of incredible opportunities. I highly recommend this school to anybody who would like to enhance their skill set. I could not have picked a better place to further my education.
