My first major class at NLI was Microsoft Word. I was looking very forward to this module because I am passionate about writing and knew this would provide me with the knowledge I needed and then some. I was not disappointed.
I was astounded by the many things that you can do in Microsoft Word. I learned how to format my pages better, insert headers, footers, bibliographies, and footnotes. We received an instruction book for this class and the size of it was a bit intimidating. But our instructor John got us through the book with exercises included, at an even pace. Learning what the ribbons are and the navigation tools are key. Another plus is that you are provided with a training program that can be downloaded to your computer at home provided you have Windows installed.
I quickly learned that just because you attend class does not mean that you will pass the exam. At NLI the hours for this class are 8:30 AM-1:30 PM, Monday-Thursday. You are able to stay and study after class if you desire. But the process does not end there. You MUST take initiative to make yourself a better student. I enrolled in this school because of the quality of its curriculum and I have dedicated myself to excelling in it.
Once the Microsoft module was completed, I gave myself a personal one week deadline to take the certification exam. To me, it is in your best interest to take the exam shortly after the module is completed. It keeps things fresh in your mind. I scheduled for late Friday morning, so I would have time to study the “core project tests” (please remember this phrase as you go through the program. Once you get these down and can score in the 900’s, you should be able to pass the exam.) Upon entering the exam room I was given fifty minutes to work on a project. Being a bit nervous, I honestly believe is normal. I completed the test in forty-eight minutes. When I was finished my passing grade popped right up. The feeling of accomplishment washed over me and I was almost quite literally jumping for joy.
Since then (I passed in mid-September, Microsoft word had immensely improved my writing skills and formatting. I recommend everybody to apply themselves during this module. It is definitely worth it and even though I am still enrolled in NLI for more classes, I am already reaping the benefits from the things I learned in this class.
