The objective of this program is to supply students with the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain gainful employment in the medical office as a medical coding/billing specialist, electronic health records specialist and/or, a medical administrative assistant.
Upon completion of this program, the student has the opportunity to pursue the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and the Certified Professional Coder (CPB) certification through the AAPC in addition to the following NHA Certifications: Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS), and Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS). In addition the student will be able to sit for certification exams in Microsoft office technology (Word, Excel).
The Healthcare course thoroughly prepares students with the ability to work in any healthcare environment warranting the utilization of all front desk office duties and skill competencies required for today’s medical industry standards. This course also covers medical office procedures, medical records management; both in a manual and computerized environment; as well as legal/ethical issues and client service skills.
The Medical Terminology and Coding course thoroughly prepares students to code patients’ medical records/EHR correctly with the use of ICD-9/ICD-10, CPT-4, and HCPCS II. Students are introduced to several techniques for finding and applying the correct codes in today’s standard coding systems.
The Electronic Health Records course will cover the usage and management of health information and the electronic health record (EHR). Students will be able to assemble the patient’s health record and ensure all information is accurate and complete.
The program provides a comprehensive blend of office administration, business communication, and financial fundamentals with the medical industry elements of medical terminology, medical diagnosis and coding (ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM CPT-4, & HCPCSII), invoice processes including billing and coding, health insurance, medical office best practices, policies and procedures (including HIPAA), and records management. Students will be thoroughly prepared for a variety of positions in the health care industry, such as medical administrative assistants, billing and coding specialists, invoice processor, and electronic health records specialists.
